Company description:: ONI-CON, HOUSTON, TX – Houston is known for its conventions, yet somehow our fair city has been overlooked by the vastly expanding anime community, that is, until now. Anime, is a drawing style prevalent in Japan and other Asian countries, has begun to become popular in America in the past decade with shows such as Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and Pokemon.
Due to many failed attempts at starting conventions here in the past, anime fans throughout the country had given up hope of a convention ever being able to take root in the Bayou City. The convention is set to take place the weekend before Halloween, October 22-24, 2004, and has taken on the name Oni-Con, oni being the Japanese word for "ogre" or "demon".
The convention was stared by Houston anime club Mallets Etc. (http://www.mallets-etc.com) and is being contributed to by individuals and organizations throughout the state. Employees of the convention are spread out as far away as the Dallas Metroplex and convention attendees are expected to come from as far away as Canada.
Oni-Con will be held at the Sheraton North Houston on JFK Blvd and convention guests can stay there for the price of $85 per night. The $30 entrance fee for the convention is a bargain, considering the numerous amounts of events are planned. Events for the convention include: 3 Anime rooms, Art Show & Auction, Live-Action Room, Banquet, Cosplay, Panels, Karaoke, Live Action Role Play, Concert, Dealer Room, 24-hour J-Pop/Rock Room, Music Video Contest, Dance Dance Revolution, Model Contest, Arcade Games, Console Games, Anime Pumpkin Carving and a Neo-Geo Gaming Tournament.
Oni-Con also boasts an impressive line up of guests for a first-year, or any year, convention Some of the guests are: voice actors Tiffany Grant, Taliesin Jaffe, Grey Ayers, Stephanie Nadolny, Monica Rail, Chris Patton, Vic Mignonga, Doc Fraga, Mandy Clark; animator Jan April Scott-Frazier; musician and manga creator, Xero Reynolds; manga illustrator and creators, Bruce Lewis, Rodney Caston and Shawn the Touched, deejay Lord Katsuhiko Jinnai and cosplayer Jason Balduf. J-pop group Deul Jewel will perform at the Concert.
